The event is free to visit, but convention-goers must first obtain tickets or, previously, wait in a queue for delayed entry. This caused problems in 2012, when fans were unable to gain access to a limited pool of tickets, with them selling out extremely quickly on each wave.
Over the years, Summer of Sonic (SoS) has attracted a number of prominent "celebrities" to the convention, in turn increasing visitor numbers. Representing STC, Nigel Kitching has appeared every year except for 2010. Nigel Dobbyn also attended in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013, selling several of his prints. Ferran Rodriguez made an appearance in 2013. In 2011, both Ian Flynn and Tracy Yardley of Archie Comics attended. Between both of these was the Sonic the Comic Online, helmed by many current staff.
In terms of musical entertainment, sound director Jun Senoue has appeared on three occasions, performing as part of Crush 40 twice. Bentley Jones, contributor to the Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) soundtrack, has also attended twice. Julien-K, a band that contributed a song to Sonic Heroes, played in 2011 but were unable to play "This Machine", despite fan protests.
From the games, Yuji Naka and Takashi Iizuka were on hand to answer fan questions in 2011. Representitives froom SUMO Digital were also confirmed to appear at some point. Mike Pollock, the voice actor for Eggman appeared as a regular guest. New games have made early playable appearances at the convention, including Sonic Chronicles, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Sonic Colours, Sonic Generations and Sonic All-Stars Racing: Transformed.

Chilli dogs have been on sale on at least one occasion, with mixed reception.
