Sonic Unleashed is a 2008 video game released on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii and Playstation 2. A mobile phone version was released in 2009.
The game features Sonic the Hedgehog as the only playable character, although night-time sees him transform into the bulky Werehog form, thanks to the machinations of Doctor Robotnik. The scientist also uses the power of the Chaos Emeralds to tear apart the planet, scattering the continents and prematurely freeing Dark Gaia. Along with new friend "Chip", Sonic sets off on a quest to restore power to the drained Chaos Emeralds, rejoin the planet and defeat two deadly foes.
Characters[]
Compared to previous releases, Sonic Unleashed contains very few returning characters, although there are many named humans in each continent. Characters that have some link to Sonic the Comic include:
New additions such as Chip, Professor Pickle and Orbot have yet to appear in any STC-related media.
Zones[]
Sonic Unleashed is unique in that the playable areas are separated into continents, with only one or two towns included in the game. To date, only Adabat and the Jungle Joyride Zone have made any sort of appearance in Sonic the Comic.
Relation to Sonic the Comic[]
To date, Sonic Unleashed has not been adapted into a strip for Sonic the Comic Online. However, the continent of Adabat has been expanded on in the Breaking News ticker, revealing that it was protected by the Royal JJ Navy until it was conquered by the New Robotnik Empire. Elsewhere, the Werehog appeared on the cover of the Hallowe'en Special, holding Caliburn.
Sonic Unleashed was the subject of exceptional criticism in the Review Zone section of Issue 248. Review Hume Iain Stewart awarded the game 40%, the second-lowest score in STC history, one issue after giving Sonic Riders Zero Gravity 25%. Stewart criticised the medal collecting, the Werehog and "glaring level design errors", but had faint praise for the "up to scratch" graphics and occasional good platforming sections.
Timeline[]
The previous game in the series was Sonic Chronicles. The next is the Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection.
