Relief

Art by Richard Elson

Relief is the name of a trap installed in the Marble Garden Zone. It usually resembles an ancient statue of a face, with its mouth open wide. From this hole, the obstacle will launch a volley of arrows at anyone it considers to be an enemy.

When Sonic the Hedgehog and Tails discovered the Floating Island, the pair touched down in the Marble Garden Zone and immediately discovered the trap. Tails' initial fears were proved right when they narrowly missed an arrow fired from Relief. After a few more arrows were sent his way, Sonic destroyed it with a Spin Attack. Unfortunately, the trap was more complex than he believed, with the Relief positioned in front of a hole in an ancient pillar. This sent Sonic into an unescapable maze of hills that saw him ejected from the island.

Despite Knuckles the Echidna supposedly clearing the island of all traps, at least two more statues still remained in the Marble Garden Zone. Porker Lewis was able to locate a cave containing an "ultimate weapon", leading Knuckles to go and investigate ahead of him. Thanks to an inspection of some scratched graffiti that warned Knuckles to "jump", the echidna narrowly avoided an arrow fired by the Relief. Knuckles responded by breaking the machine in two.

Trivia[]

  • Reliefs originally appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. On this occasion, Reliefs need to be hit on their red gem three times before they become inactive. Unlike most traps in the games, Relief does not contain an organic battery.
