The Mountain of Destiny is a volcano and one of the largest mountains in the Hill Top Zone. Much of the Zone's settlements were once built on the volcano, with Chief Kordon calling Sonic the Hedgehog for help when it appeared the volcano was about to erupt. The bird believed that the "Gods" were angry with the tribe for some reason and the eruption was a punishment (meaning he wanted Sonic to directly defy the deities). Sonic did not buy into this "supernatural mumbo-jumbo" but he and Tails ventured into the Mountain of Destiny to see what they could do.

Inside, a rope pulley provides access to the lower areas of the volcano, but a hidden Rexon Badnik surprised the heroes from underneath the lava, destroying their platform. Eventually, the heroes arrived in a sunken chamber to discover that Doctor Robotnik's Seismatron was responsible for erupting the volcano three seconds later. Kordon believed their homes to be destroyed now that Sonic had failed, but Tails convinced a raging Super Sonic to cool the flowing magma with a Sonic-Cyclone technique. Once Sonic reverted to his usual self, he directed Tails to look at the giant Sonic statue he had created from the cooled lava, leaving a lasting monument in the Zone.

The mountain has made two subsequent cameos in Sonic the Comic Online. In search of the person responsible for attacking Mobius with Mega Mack bombs, Sonic was sent by the Kintobor Computer to the Hill Top Zone, running past his old statue in the process. Over seventy years later, Silver the Hedgehog travelled to the Mountain of Destiny, using telekinesis to reach the Floating Island as it passed the volcano. In this appearance, the statue could no longer be seen.
