Mobius At War is a major story arc in Sonic the Comic Online that began in Issue 250 and concluded in Issue 275. It directly followed on from Sonic the Hedgehog's fall from grace, with consequences from those stories still being felt here. Unlike many other story arcs, the majority of strips in the comic are directly affected by the overlying events, with the horrors of war present in many character stories. While original to the comic, elements of Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Rush, Sonic Battle, and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) have been seen.
Background[]
Many years ago, an "accident" saw Doctor Kintobor turn into the evil Doctor Ivo Robotnik. Soon after, he would go on to take over Mobius and rule through harsh treatment of his subjects, the only resistance coming from Sonic the Hedgehog and his Freedom Fighters. In time, the people of Mobius realised they could stand up to this threat and began to revolt whilst Robotnik was away, seriously undermining Grimer's caretaker abilities. However, it wasn't until an electromagnetic pulse caused by the Black Asteroid's explosion ended Robotnik's reign for good.
For the next few years, Robotnik repeatedly attempted to regain a hold of Mobius, but to no avail. He initially launched Badnik attacks from Flickies' Island before receiving help from the Drakon Empire. This eventually allowed him to absorb power from the Chaos Emeralds and temporarily become a God, although defeat saw him exiled to the world of Shanazar. Upon his return, successive failures saw his mind crumble and he slipped into insanity. Robotnik was locked in an asylum, but was freed by Doctor Zachary of The Syndicate. Still insane, he was unable to achieve his final wish of destroying the planet and was teleported to an unknown location by a dying Shadow the Hedgehog.
New Robotnik Empire[]
Life on Mobius changed after this. Through no fault of his own, Sonic's reputation began to be tarnished as the Kane Broadcasting Company began running a smear campaign against him, motivated by Grimer's revenge. The final nail in the coffin was added when the Neo Metallix convinced Sonic's friends that the hedgehog was a villain, forcing the hero to leave the planet.
Just as he was about to escape Mobius forever, a squadron of Badniks invaded a mountain town, announcing that the "New Robotnik Empire" planned to take over Mobius once more. The problem was not isolated, as many Zones across Mobius were being attacked by a wide variety of robots. The Control Centre was destroyed, the Floating Island was targeted and Robotnik seemed likely to achieve his new goal of becoming a dictator once more. Unfortunately for him, the public were not as subserviant as before and fought back, helping the Freedom Fighters beat the Badniks. Elsewhere, Sonic learned that Robotnik was indeed behind the chaos, his brain hooked up to a supercomputer by the Drakon Empire. Robotnik planned to rule the world as a puppet leader and, should his invasion fail, he could destroy Mobius by detonating the dormant Chaos Tap.
The initial invasion proved unsuccessful, but Robotnik's limited resources would eventually prove quite a toll on the heroes. After several bombing raids on Zones, the decision was made to evacuate children to the Miracle Planet, aided by the Freedom Fighters and G.U.N., a new peacekeeping force. However, they inadvertently took Tails Doll Badniks with them, Amy only just managing to destroy them before the planet disappeared once again. Elsewhere, the Chaotix Crew, realising that the destroyed Special Zone was no longer a priority, opted to protect The Internet. Espio the Chameleon was sent into the Mad Matrix Zone to destroy rogue Robotnik programs but accidentally stumbled into a software version of Shadow.
In a bid to entirely display his supposed dominance, Robotnik hatched a plan to completely destroy his former base of operations and capital city - the Metropolis Zone. To this end, he renovated the crashed Wing Fortress and layed a series of traps to convince Sonic to track it down. Unbeknownst to the hero, he found himself trapped in the ship's control room as it plummeted to the city below.
Tails - Hero of Mobius[]
With Sonic believed to be a villain and now nowhere to be seen, the planet needed a new hero to look up to. Although Amy was the de facto leader of the Freedom Fighters, the Emerald Hill folk seemingly witnessed Tails destroy the beastly Egg Viper (although it was actually Sonic from inside the machine doing the hard work). Tails, previously ignored by the majority of Mobius, became a massive celebrity; the decline in sales of Sonic merchandise was replaced by an upswing in Tails toys, whilst he was given his own show, the Miles Prauer Power Hour. His reponsibilities increased, exacerbated by current events going on in his homeworld of the Nameless Zone. Discovering the resistance group of Morain, Pippa and Trent to be wanted for sabotage, Tails invited them to Mobius to see a "real war". The trio were taken aback by the wonders of Mobius and vowed to return and help in the war effort once things settled down back home.
During a routine mission to stop Villin Othawick's latest attack, Tails stumbled upon The Ultimax, a trio of crime-fighters supported by a large bank account. The heroes bumbled their way through the fight against the Green Gremlin, but Tails recognised their potential and offered to team up with them. Leader Dexter Bagstille was initially reluctant to do things differently and only relented from the pressure of his teammates - eventually deciding to employ Tails as a "mascot". In their first full adventure together, the foursome helped evacuate citizens from the Maple Flower Zone. Unfortunately, Dexter's ego got the better of him and he tasked a TV crew to present "The Ultimax-Eye", a programme that followed their heroic exploits into the underground escape tunnels. This coverage alerted Robotnik to their whereabouts and the cave was bombed, trapping the media team. Tails thought up a plan and gave a rousing speech, vowing to save the civilians. He eventually escorted them to the Emerald Hill Zone, despite the efforts of a Badnik attack and the bumbling Dermot Delirious.
More new Freedom Fighters[]
Tails had his new team and the original Freedom Fighters were all but finished. Amy continued to work alone, protecting the people of Mobius from Robotnik's attacks, one arrow at a time. Following her quiet heroics on the Miracle Planet, Amy continued to help out relief in the Metropolis Zone. One day, she was confronted by a disguised Sonic, attempting to convince her that he was innocent. Amy refused to believe these pleas and a large brawl broke out between the former friends. Sonic proved far too fast and strong for Amy and easily evaded her attacks. Before long, Sonic tired of the battle and vowed to find a way to prove his innocence. Amy's resolve briefly flicked, but she needed to remain strong for Mobius.
This strength would be tested all the more when she was tasked with protecting Fabian Vane, the terrible singer that was giving Mobians hope in harsh times. Robotnik recognised the joy he was giving people and sent personally-controlled robots to kill him. At each leg of the tour, Amy was on hand to sabotage Robotnik's plans. She wasn't the only one, as each Zone was unearthing new heroic talent to help her. Mark & Sparks, two monkeys from the Casino Night Zone that had previously helped Tails, were now "Freedom Fighters" and wore jackets adorned with Tails' face. Along with several other amateur heroes and Max Gamble's personal bodyguards, yet another invasion was thwarted.
Other factions of heroes emerged, although their intentions were not always as heroic. The paramilitary agency of S.P.E.A.R., led by Captain Blue and Mr Gold, appeared to arrest Robotnik sympathisers and even severely wounded General Url of the villainous Brain Drain Society. Amy believed that this group were secretly supporters of Robotnik and personally met with their leader to interrogate them. However, the enigmatic Gold proved more than a match for them, even with the meddling Fockewulf De Shrike impeding both of their efforts. Gold revealed that he was not a fan of Robotnik, but his intentions remain hidden. He has, however, recruited villains Doctor Genius and Windy Wallis to help him.
Chaos Tap and the Drakon Empire[]
It quickly became clear to a select few that Robotnik's attacks were merely a front for a massive Drakon-led invasion of Mobius. Robotnik had been installed as a puppet leader, weakening Mobius' defences before the Drakons arrived to take control, enabling them to seize the Chaos Emeralds. The seeds had already been sown by Rouge the Bat, who had commited a number of morale-breaking crimes with the instruction of Master Scholar. These acts continued into the war, namely affecting clean-up operations in the Scrap Brain Zone, Dust Hill Zone and the old site of Citadel Robotnik.
Robotnik's last-resort was to detonate the Chaos Tap should his invasion badly fail and boasted this plan to both Sonic and Knuckles the Echidna. After travelling the planet for a while, Sonic arranged to use the Omni-Viewer to absorb the Chaos Tap's excess energy. However, the computer was distracted by the Femni-Viewer and, instead, Sonic was joined by Knuckles. The battling pair briefly set aside their differences and Knuckles used the Grey Emerald to negate the Chaos Tap's destructive abilities. Sonic then escaped before Knuckles could take him to a G.U.N. base. More importantly, Robotnik's threat had seriously diminished.
Whilst relaxing in the North Cave, Sonic was interrupted by Masad Akaan of the Household Keepers. The employee of Dunzi revealed that he had read a legend of Savannah and how there was a secret weapon hidden underneath the Frozen Zone. However, Lord Utsire of the Drakon Empire was the first to find it and used representatives from the House of Magic to excavate it. Sonic quickly destroyed it, deducing that the Drakons were in a weaker state than he initially believed.
Media coverage[]
During the war, KBC have commissioned a number of programmes supporting the heroic war effort. Often filmed by Choy, shows at the beginning usually focused on the grim reality of war, although Hobson convinced him to begin recording heroes in action. Choy later wrote a one-off blog (Breaking News!) whilst Norris Wimple launched a 3-part Encyclopedia Badnika on the new threats.
Sonic the Comic Online was regularly updated with war news by the Breaking News ticker. This highlighted efforts in individual Zones, such as the collapse of the Jungle Joyride Zone or the heroics of the Turquoise Hill Zone Freedom Fighters. However, the ticker mysteriously stopped (apparently Megadroid broke it), and it has not returned.
In music, Fabian Vane's popularity surged and he released the album Vane to cheer people up.
And So It Ends![]
Due to the efforts of the Freedom Fighter groups, and some happy accidents along the way, Sonic and company were able to take down Dr. Robotnik, seemingly destroying him, before breaching the Planet Drak for a surprise attack.
