Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is a 2007/2008 video game for the Nintendo Wii and DS. It marked the first time that characters from the Mario and Sonic series met in a full video game and is set around the 2008 Olympic Summer Games.
Characters[]
Several Sonic the Comic characters appeared in this title, albeit in their Sega guises:
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Miles "Tails" Prower
- Knuckles the Echidna
- Amy Rose
- Dr. Eggman
- Shadow the Hedgehog
- Vector the Crocodile
- Blaze the Cat
As well as the above playable characters, Cream the Rabbit, Espio the Chameleon and Charmy Bee act as judges in both versions. Big the Cat makes additional background appearances on the Wii version, whilst Flicky, Porker Lewis, Tux, Joe Sushi and a variety of Chao can be seen in the audience.
STC feature[]
In preparation for the actual 2008 Olympic Games, artist Jin Chan Yum Wai visited Beijing. Whilst there, Jin and sister Jade took part in a variety of challenges on the Wii version of the game, particularly trying to beat the 100m record. Such was their determination that they even visited the gym to tone up and eventually reached the top 7% in the rankings. Their chronicles were posted as the Olympic Zone in Sonic the Poster Mag 2007.
Elsewhere in the issue, Shadic covered the game in the Review Zone. The title was awarded 74, with praise going towards its "varied gameplay", charm of both franchises and the "great multiplayer". However, Shadic also noted that it was a tad generic for a crossover game and criticised the repetitive, lacklustre events.
Timeline[]
The previous game in the series was Sonic Rush Adventure. The next is Sega Superstars Tennis, with the next "Olympics" game being Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games.
