Issue 89

Issue 89 is the eighty-ninth edition of Sonic the Comic. Released on the 16th of October 1996 at the price of £1.20, the issue contains four original stories (three of them new) as well as several features and a free gift of a Goosebumps sticker album and stickers. This issue was marketed as a "Hell-bent Hallowe'en issue".

Sonic the Hedgehog[]

The Tomb is a 2-part story by Nigel Kitching, Richard Elson, Steve White and Tom Frame. Sonic has managed to get in touch with the Freedom Fighters and explains why he can't go home, but the conversation is cut short by Espio the Chameleon. Flying off in a Charmy Bee-shaped ship, the Chaotix Crew plan to trap Omni-Viewer and Super Sonic in the Black Asteroid by setting off a bomb in the entrance. As Vector the Crocodile takes them into the asteroid, Nack the Weasel sneaks on board and shrinks the passengers. The weasel captures Chaotix, leaving Sonic on his own.

Knuckles the Echidna[]

The Good, The Bad and the Echidna is a 4-part story written by Kitching, with art by Nigel Dobbyn and letters from Elitta Fell. The sheriff of Backwater has returned, ousting Deputy Krouch and instating Knuckles as his new deputy. Knuckles heads to the saloon looking for Chito. A private fight between them leads to a massive bar brawl. After taking so much abuse, Chito admits he tried to kill Rooster and Boss Krouch is on his way to finish the job.

Decap Attack[]

The Pumpkin Chaser is a complete story written by Kitching and Richard Rayner, drawn by Kitching and lettered by Ellie de Ville. Professor Frank N. Stein has called in Kevin of the TPC to catch some "Pumpelkins". As they fly from the attic, Chuck D. Head attempts to use Head to destroy them, but Kevin returns with a net and locks them all away. Unfortunately, he's captured Head as well!

Sonic's World[]

A New Hope is a complete story by Lew Stringer, Carl Flint, Andy Pritchett and Frame. The Freedom Fighters are faced with another Badnik attack but things go badly when Tails is knocked out of the sky and Amy Rose is kidnapped by a Balkiry. Shortfuse the Cybernik saves Amy and helps the other heroes eradicate the Badniks. With Sonic still gone, Shortfuse agrees to join the Freedom Fighters.

Features[]

Megadroid introduces "Broomers" to this issue's Halloween Control Zone, insulting his "Bat Brain Humes". There's also an explanation for this issue's free gift. The Sega Charts are completely altered this week; Athlete Kings is a new entry at the top of the Saturn chart, whilst Brian Lara Cricket '96, Brutal: Paws of Fury and The Lion King moving up to head the Mega Drive, Mega-CD and Game Gear charts respectively.

This week's Review Zone is a joint effort by Jenny Fromer and Nick Protz, with Worms on the Mega Drive receiving 85% for being "totally addictive", despite its "limited backgrounds". The theme of this issue's Graphic Zone is "Fright Zone", with the Hallowe'en costume designs winning Boomers a pack of Crayola Mini Stampers 2.

The walkthrough for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 continues in the Q Zone this week, giving tips on the Hydrocity and Marble Garden Zones. Speedlines includes letters about buying the Speedlines prizes, the lack of foul language in the comic and an invite for Chuck D. Head to come to a Boomer's house. Published letters and pictures won the readers a Sega Mega Hog Tag.
