Issue 85 is the eighty-fifth edition of Sonic the Comic. Released on the 21st August 1996 at the price of £1.20, the comic contained four original stories (two of them new), several features and a Chewits competition.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Heroes & Villains is a 3-part Sonic story that begins the hedgehog's stay in the Special Zone. Written by Nigel Kitching, drawn by Richard Elson and lettered by Ellie de Ville, the story sees Sonic pleading his innocence to Lieutanent Furor. Released from prison by Lord Sidewinder, Sonic is soon thrown into a deadly battle with Super Sonic and Sidewinder's motley crew.

Knuckles the Echidna

Village of the Damned is a 3-part Knuckles story, part of the World Tour of Mobius arc. The story, by Kitching, Nigel Dobbyn and Elitta Fell, follows Knuckles as he goes to the rescue of a sacrifice in the middle of a mob. An exhausted Knuckles goes to sleep but is betrayed by the sacrifice, the echidna making a handy replacement.

Trooper Trouble is a 2-part story by Lew Stringer, Carl Flint, Gina Hart and Tom Frame. Tails responds to a distress call from the Wood Village Zone, where a rogue Trooper has been causing problems. In reality, it's actually Clive the Donkey in disguise, but the village wimp has alerted the real Troopers in the Zone.

Sonic's World

Scream Theme Park is a complete story by Stringer, Roberto Corona, John M Burns and Frame. In the heart of the Casino Night Zone, Max Gamble has opened the Pit Plunge Roller Coaster to new customers and all goes well until the ride leads to a Badnik Processing Plant. Fortunately for the thrill-seekers, Shortfuse the Cybernik has also joined the fun and destroys the equipment, saving the citizens and ending Gamble's dastardly plans.

This issue's Control Zone, hosted by Megadroid, welcomes old and new Boomers to this issue's stories, gets ready to enjoy the Bank Holiday and even throws out a joke. There are also winners of a Sonic Baseball Jacket Compo. The Sega Charts show some change this week, with Brutal: Paws of Fury and The Lion King moving to the top of the Mega-CD and Game Gear charts, respectively. Elsewhere, Brian Lara Cricket '96 remains at the top of the Mega Drive rankings while new entry Guardian Heroes tops the Saturn chart.

The Review Zone sees David Gibbon feature Olympic Summer Games (87%) and puzzle game Baku Baku (90%). The Graphic Zone becomes the "Clown Around Zone", with pictures of Sonic and friends enjoying the circus. Owners of published pictures won a pack of Crayola Mini Stampers 2.

This week, the Q Zone becomes the "Q&A Zone", with Gibbon answering questions on the original Sonic the Hedgehog video game. Speedlines has readers congratulating the recent run of Tails stories, asking about Vector the Crocodile's toothpaste and there's a first-time Speedtrack user. Readers who submitted letters and pictures to Speedlines won a Sega Mega Hog Tag.
