Issue 40 is the fourtieth edition of Sonic the Comic, the UK's official SEGA comic. Released on the 26th November 1994, at the price of £1.15, the issue contained four original stories and several features, as well as a free gift of Sonic stickers

Sonic the Hedgehog[]

The Frozen Zone is a Sonic the Hedgehog complete story, written by Lew Stringer, drawn by Casanovas, coloured by John M Burns and lettered by Ellie de Ville. Sonic the Hedgehog and the Freedom Fighters visit the Pleasant Zone to find it completely covered in ice and its citizens frozen solid! With Johnny Lightfoot succumbing to the cold, the rest discover a plan hatched by The Chiller.

Eternal Champions[]

Larson's Revenge is a 4-part Eternal Champions story, the final one in the series. Written by Michael Cook, drawn by Jon Haward and lettered by Tom Frame, the story sees Larcen Tyler and Shadow Yamoto attempt to escape the clutches of Mr Tagliani. Things go wrong and they tied into a car rigged with dynamite. Only quick-thinking saves the heroes and brings down organised crime in 1920s Chicago.

Knuckles the Echidna[]

Carnival Night Conspiracy is a 6-part Knuckles story, the first to date. The Nigel Kitching, Richard Elson and Elitta Fell story sees Knuckles meet up with the Marxio Brothers. Apologising for trying to kill him, they offer Knuckles a chance to see the Carnival Night Zone. The echidna is sceptical after seeing Trooper forces belonging to Doctor Robotnik, but relents when he tries out a rollercoaster, rigged to kill him.

Decap Attack[]

The Replacement is a Decap Attack story, written and drawn by Kitching, with lettering by Steve Potter. Professor Frank N. Stein has succeeded in creating new life. After some teething problems, Head points out that Frank has no need for two monsters. After a fight to the death with Chuck D. Head, the new creature jumps off the top of Castle Frank N. Stein and begins a glittering TV career.

Features[]

This issue's Control Zone saw Megadroid welcome Boomers to the comic's stories as well as promising free gifts in the next two issues. Following an advert for the new Sonic the Poster Mag 7, Megadroid apologises for a Hume error which saw two pictures in Issue 37 get their creator tags get mixed up. Worse still, one of them was even mispelled. The Sega Charts saw four new leaders of the charts; new entry Urban Strike topped the Mega Drive chart while Sonic CD rose to the top of the Mega-CD chart. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 returned to top the Master System and Game Gear lists.

All covered by David Gibbon, the Review Zone saw Bubsy 2 and Sylvester & Tweety-Pie in Cagey Capers (both for the Mega Drive) receive scores of 85% and 91%, respectively. The News Zone covered special effects in movies crossing over to video games as well as new games for the Mega-CD from Core Design, Argonaut Software, Cyberdreams and Domark. 'Short Bursts' covered new games Red Zone, Sea Quest DSV and Flashback.

A large portion of the Q Zone was dedicated to Virtua Racing, giving hints on how to beat the Beginner level as well as a cheat. As well as this, passwords and cheats were given for Pete Sampras Tennis and Robocop vs The Terminator. This letters in issue's Speedlines are accidentally reprinted from the previous issue, with one reader recounting his story of meeting Sonic, another offering a recipe for Mobius Eggs and somebody else's father thinks he's a cockerel. The pictures illustrating the page are new, showing off a Tails-Megadroid hybrid and a drawing of Shion. All winning entrants received a Tomy Sonic the Hedgehog Water Fun Game.
