Issue 178 is the one hundred and seventy-eighth edition of Sonic the Comic. Released on the 5th April 2000 at the price of £1.35, the issue contains one original story and three reprints, as well as several features, part 3 of a mega-sized pin-up and a free gift of stickers.

Splash-Down! is a complete story by Nigel Kitching, Richard Elson and Ellie de Ville. Chaos is in the Emerald Chamber and is stealing the Chaos Emeralds. The only option left is to eject them to the four corners of Mobius, with Chaos in pursuit. In another dimension, Doctor Robotnik and Grimer track the Emeralds' flight and move to collect them. On the Floating Island, the Freedom Fighters arrive to prise Knuckles away from certain death and Sonic returns to save the world.

Sonic is back to answer readers questions in Speedlines. Letters includes praise for Tails, a return to a Sonic and Knuckles team-up, a new villain called "Spikeball", a "Sonic gang" and a possible review of Sonic Adventure (that never appears).

This issue's Graphic Zone has the theme of "Sonic and the Gang", with pictures of Sonic's friends earning artistic Boomers a Sonic the Hedgehog watch.

The previous issue of Sonic the Comic was Issue 177. The next is Issue 179.
