Gilbert Grumpy is an elderly turtle from the Metropolis Zone. Grumpy by nature, Gilbert dislikes fun and only cares about his perfect garden. Grumpy even believes that a football landing on his lawn is "damage" after it dented 32 blades of grass. The turtle is particularly proud that he won the Weedless Patio Trophy from Popular Compost Magazine.
His pristine garden was ruined when the Doom Seed began to sprout weeds throughout the city, with the first appearing in the middle of Grumpy's lawn. Sonic the Hedgehog arrived to help but angered Grumpy when he ran over his strawberry patch. When more weeds appeared, Sonic locked Grumpy in his own shed to avoid the danger. Sonic disappeared to tackle more weed sprouts, but returned with Amy Rose and Tekno the Canary to investigate the source. Still stuck in his shed, Grumpy ordered the hedgehogs to leave his garden. After being freed from the shed, he then yelled at Tekno for using a Drilling Machine on his lawn.
The defeat of the Doom Seed left hundreds of dead weeds in Grumpy's garden. Fortunately, he was pleased with the chance to use them as compost, something that would do his rose bushes wonders.
