Fate of the Special Zone is a complete Sonic the Hedgehog story which appeared in Issue 233 of Sonic the Comic Online.

Story[]
Sonic has confronted Shadow the Hedgehog in the Special Zone, the dark hedgehog offering Sonic a opportunity to surrender quietly before the Chaos Emeralds collide, destroying the Zone. The hedgehogs begin to fight, while Knuckles and Chaotix continue to battle the army of robot spiders unleashed upon their ship by Doctor Zachary. Unfortunately, with all heroes fighting, no one is flying the ship and it crashes into an asteroid. As Knuckles and Chaotix recover, and the Omni-Viewer arrives, Sonic and Shadow continue their fight, Shadow revealing that the Special Zone is of no real concern to The Syndicate, their only goal for the moment being the Emeralds. With the Emeralds fast approaching, Knuckles and Mighty join the battle, but are easily blasted away by Shadow. From the sidelines, Sonic orders Omni to warp the Emeralds out of the Special Zone when they arrive. Espio tries a sneak attack on Shadow, but is easily swatted away, and the Emeralds have arrived. Omni tries to send the Emeralds to Mobius, but his systems, which run on a form of Chaos energy, are hijacked by Shadow, and he is manipulated into sending Knuckles and Chaotix to Mobius instead. As the Special Zone begins to implode, Shadow's mission complete, he leads Sonic away, planning to show him something. Meanwhile, Knuckles and Chaotix arrive in one of Mobius' greener Zones and try to re-establish a connection with the Special Zone, but to no avail: Nothing remains but an empty void, and what's more, there's no trace of Sonic....
