The Eternal Champions Special is a special edition of Sonic the Comic, focused squarely on the Eternal Champions of stories. Since it is not a main issue, or part of the Sonic the Poster Mag and Sonic Holiday Special series, it is unique in being a series-specific special. The issue, released between Issue 19 and Issue 20, at the price of £1.75, contains three new stories, profiles on all the main characters and an interview with the game's creator.

Death Isn't Forever is a complete story by Michael Cook, with art from Jon Haward and Tom Frame. The story is a prequel to the first Eternal Champions story, showing how all nine Champions died and were revived by The Eternal Champion to take part in a combat tournament. After intense training, four bouts decide five losers ready to be sent home to die. Three of the remaining fighters make a pact to stick together and fight for their future as a team, but the bloodlust awakens in Midknight, causing them all to finish the competition. In the end, Shadow and Midknight join forces and convince the Eternal Champion to revive all the fallen Champions so that they may fight The Overlord.
Reality Check is another complete story by Cook, this time art duties shared by Brian Williamson, Stephen Baskerville and Dondie Cox, with lettering by Richard Bird. After winning a bout with Shadow, RAX takes her out to the city to get used to their surroundings. A suggestion from the Eternal Champion takes them to The Dream Bank, a place where humans are forced to surrender their free will and enter The Overlord's world. The heroes tear up the guards on duty and free their fellows from slavery.
Brains & Brawls is the final complete story of the trio, presented by Williamson, Bambos Georgiou and Una Fricka, Frame returning with the letters. Xavier is watching as Slash struggles in The Battle Room, horrifying Jetta. The Eternal Champions forces his understudies to build new computer systems that Slash can understand, which leads to the neanderthal trapping Xavier in the room in revenge.
Features[]
"Time Lines" is a short column on the first page that mentions the Eternal Champions game's conception (past), their current exploits in Sonic the Comic (present) and possible routes the series could go now (future). Genesis of the Eternal Champions sees STC talk to Michael Latham from Sega of America, who answers questions on the game's concepts, how long it took to create, the 100+ people involved with the game, the characters and their mannerisms, martial arts, the 'intelligence' system, training modes, different endings, Larcen being Latham's favourite character, a comparison with Street Fighter 2 and plans for future Eternal games.
Champ Stats are littered throughout the comic, focusing on each of the nine Eternal Champions. Along with a full-page pin-up, each profile lists the warriors' full name, former occupation, fighting style, time zone of origin, original destiny/death, their background, appearance, mannerisms, likes and dislikes. After all this, the special lists how to perform each and every one of the characters' moves and special abilities, along with how damage each one will do to the opponent.
Finally, the back cover features a poster by Cliff Robinson.
Staff[]
For this special, each staff member has received a nickname relating to one of the characters. For some reason, Steve MacManus has the nickname of 'Jetta', even though Larcen was free. Clare Gillmore also gets the macho character of Blade:
- Richard Burton (Xavier) - editor
- Deborah Tate (Shadow) - "sub-editor" (the only time this title is used)
- Clare Gillmore (Blade) - designer
- Jon Haward (RAX) - cover art
- Cliff Robinson (Midknight) - back cover
- Vincent Low (Trident) - features (although he is mispelled as "Lowe")
- Chris Power (Slash) - publisher
- Steve MacManus (Jetta) - managing editor
Instead of Megadroid, this issue is presented by "The Eternal Editor".
