The great Elder Tree was once the wisest and most compassionate of all the living trees in Metropolis Park, Metropolis Zone. From his stationary point, the Elder Tree could see pollution taking over the world thanks to Doctor Ivo Robotnik and wished to do something about it. However, he couldn't move from his rooted spot and didn't wish for innocent protestors to be injured for their cause.
When Robotnik sent two Armourillas and sorcerer Omen to disperse a crowd in front of the tree, the Elder Tree watched on, presumably with some discomfort. Unfortunately, a stray missile intended for Knuckles the Echidna hit the tree and completely destroyed it, leaving just a stump. Having lost the wisest of them all, the other trees spawned a gigantic forest around him and planned to take over Mobius. Thanks to Knuckles' words of wisdom, the other trees learned some of the Elder Tree's advice and non-violent tendencies. After these events, Robotnik sealed off the area while the other trees awaited the inevitable respawning of their leader.
