Story[]
Tails is playing football deep in the Emerald Hill Zone one day when his ball goes flying into the bushes. In an attempt to find it, Tails is surprised when he discovers that Sonic has been trapped inside a monitor. The hedgehog states that Doctor Robotnik trapped him in the item box and all Tails needs to do is press the red button to free him. Tails happily goes along with this, until he realises the Sonic he has freed is actually an evil double.
A short distance away, the Emerald Hill folk are building a new hideout. Tux complains that this is thirsty work, but Joe Sushi insists it'll be worth having a base that Robotnik knows nothing about. As the evil Sonic rushes towards the hideout, someone happily says Sonic can help them finish the job. The double has other ideas, speeding straight into the hideout and destroying part of it. Dashing into the forest, the double leaves behind some confused residents. Johnny Lightfoot is happy that he didn't break his neck, but Porker Lewis notices that Sonic is moving so fast that he has set the forest on fire. The heroes quickly attempt to cut the flames out, wondering why Sonic has gone so crazy and hoping that he stops before someone gets hurt. With a burst of Sonic speed, the evil double destroys the power plant and, effectively, the whole hideout. Before long, however, the real Sonic turns up to sort things out.
Tripping the double up, Sonic has heard that somebody is giving him a bad reputation. While dazed, Sonic kicks his doppelganger out of the way by booting him into the sky. The Emerald Hill folk catch up to Sonic and demand revenge for what he did, but Sonic insists it was a weird, evil double.. honest! The citizens are livid, stating it will takes days for them to clean things up. Sally Acorn is furious and wants Sonic banished from the Zone in case he betrays them to Robotnik (despite everything he did to liberate them from slavery). Fortunately, Sonic is saved when the angry double rushes back and attacks everyone, the folk now seeing two Sonics. As Sally swiftly apologises, Tails wakes up from a slight concussion to see a large commotion in the village. The cunning fox already knows what to do, picking up the monitor and heading back home.
The double is starting to win the fight between the hedgehogs and, with Sonic about dead, the evil twin reveals that he was created by Doctor Kintobor as an "Extra Life", an extra chance for the world's favourite hedgehog. He was created before Kintobor turned evil, and the years of waiting turned the extra life evil, plotting what to do when he was free. Soon, though, Tails arrives with the item box and presses the button again, this time sucking the evil Sonic back in. The extra life vows to escape and cause havoc again, but Sonic puts paid to this by using a super-sonic kick to blast the monitor into outer space. With the problems over, Sally apologises for confusing Sonic with that "ugly brute". Sonic is kind of offended, believing the extra life to be "kinda handsome".
